Massage has been used for centuries to promote health and wellness. In China the oldest written record dates back almost 4000 years and in Greece Hippocrates is said to have believed that massage had two primary uses 'strengthening and relaxing of the muscles' along with exercise and the two were strongly connected in Ancient Greece. In India, Hindus used massage in Ayurveda passed down through the generations to support with illness, relieve pain and help to heal injuries.
So how does massage help our bodies?
Massage improves circulation and stimulates the lymphatic system which helps support a healthy immune system. Increasing circulation also brings a whole host of benefits including bringing essential nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and surrounding tissue areas. It can help detoxify the body by removing waste products such as lactic acid from our muscles.
We can support our posture by receiving regular massages, if you sit at a desk all day you won't need me to tell you how tight your shoulders and neck can feel after a long day of conference calls and pouring over Excel spreadsheets! But by loosening and relaxing those muscles it can help bring back flexibility.
This brings me to another huge benefit of massage, stress relief! In a study discussed In MedicalNewsToday it talks about the positive impact massage has on our Parasympathetic Nervous System which is essential in helping us cope and recover from the impacts of stress. It is estimated (source: eExtra News) that 70-80% of GP visits are for stress-related illnesses and that 50% of all illnesses are caused by stress. The statistics can be alarming which in itself is stress-inducing. Having regular massages can support stress management along with a healthy balanced lifestyle.
Massage is such a wonderful way to destress and reconnect with ourselves physically and mindfully. I love to create bespoke treatments using organic oil blends that call to you.
I hold a ITEC Level 3 diploma in massage and offer Swedish style massage and Hot Stone Massage.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing technique used within Eastern medicine for thousands of years. Reiki comes from the Japanese word for universal life force energy and aims to channel positive and gentle energy, activating the natural healing processes within the body safely and gently. Reiki aims to support clients by encouraging relaxation and by balancing the mind and body.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki can be received in person or remotely using distance Reiki. In person, the practitioner places their hands over the clothed individual in specific positions (usually head, shoulders and feet) to channel and guide energy throughout the body, utilising the main chakras. In distance Reiki, the practitioner would perform Reiki using the distance symbol and works according to the ancient principle known as the Hermetic Law of Similarity. This principle theorises we are all made of energy and this energy can be tapped into as the principle states we are all made of energy, we are all connected are therefore are all part of a larger whole. Scientific research has shown that practitioners emit electromagnetic and biomagnetic energies from their hands, which have been identified as the optimum frequency to stimulate the healing process in the body, according to medical researchers. Although research into Reiki is still new, developments are emerging as the practice grows.
What are the benefits of Reiki treatment?
Reiki is a gentle energy healing technique, and many clients and patients have reported benefits from their treatments. These include:
Accessibility: Because Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive method of healing, it can be used by all.
Complementary: Reiki works alongside orthodox healthcare and natural remedies, expanding treatment options. It is not a replacement for traditional medicine.
Relaxing: Clients have reported feeling a calm and peaceful sense of well-being on all levels.
Self-improvement: Clients have also reported that regular Reiki treatments can encourage positive personal choices, such as improving diet and exercise and promoting self-care.
I am trained to a Reiki Level 2 but am aspiring to expand further in this area in 2024
